DYER | Sandi Schantz and her mother, Ginny Anderson, know sometimes people need help, and they've started their new business
to provide it.
"Our goal is to assist individuals to remain in the comfort, familiarity and routine of their own home," Schantz
said. "We provide personal, homemaking and companion care for individuals needing some assistance, supervision and/or
guidance with daily living routines."
Schantz, a registered nurse, and Anderson, who's been a caregiver for two decades, recently were licensed by in Indiana
and opened In Home Personal Care and an office in Dyer so it can become more visible.
"We're trying to contact people to let them know what we have available," Anderson said. "We don't have
much money for advertising, so we're pounding the pavement and handing out literature at doctor's office and clinics."
They started the business with the aid of their backgrounds, about $2,000 in savings and knowledge that there‘s
a need for their services.
"It's a very important service because there are a lot of people who need help, who can't help themselves with anything
from a bath to going to the store or doctor's or making a themselves a meal," Anderson said. "It could be someone
whose had a baby and needs help or someone who's had surgery or someone with a handicapped child or someone who's elderly."
The mother-daughter team currently have about 10 independent contractors on their staff. About half of them are licensed
certified nursing assistants, and all have passed background checks and physicals, and have valid driver's licenses and insurance,
Being licensed by the state means the business must abide by its rules and regulations that assure caregivers have passed
a criminal background check, are free of communicable diseases and are capable of providing certain basic care unsupervised.
"We're very careful about who we send to a client's home." she said. "We do reference checks on all the
caregivers and make sure each of them is suitable to fill the client's needs."
The cost of a caregiver is $15 an hour and a CNA is $17 an hour, both with a four-hour minimum per visit.
"The amount of time depends on the client needs," Anderson said. "It could be the minimum just once a week,
or 24-hours-a-day depending on the client. To us, it's not really about money. We're doing it for the people. There are so
many that need someone to come in and help them."
That was then.....and NOW 2017

The Passing of the Torch
From Mother & Daughter to Mother & Daughter in Law
What started seven years ago with a mom and daughter is still going strong . When Ginny (the mom) and Sandi
(the daughter) started In Home Personal Care, LLC, they just wanted to use their years of experience to help families.
Ginny, who had been a caregivers for several years herself, and Sandi, a nurse for 30+ years, knew there were families caring
for parents while still working, and elderly who needed help who either didn't have family, or knew their families were still
working and didn't have the time, or they didn't want to impose on them.
Thankful for the 7 years of being a part of so many families, In Home Personal Care, LLC, hopes to continue to
grow and help more families. Ginny (the mom) has since passed away. This business was her joy. So, in the meantime, Sandi
(the daughter) now becomes the mother and brings her daughter in law, Shelly, into the business.
Shelly has been a C.N.A., has worked at nursing homes and rehab facilities. Together we carry on Ginny's love for the
people in our communities. We provide care givers and c.n.a.s to assist individuals
in their homes.
While our primary office has moved from Dyer, to Lowell, we still serve Northwest Indiana and parts of northeast
Illinois. Our phone numbers have not changed and Ginny's voice is still on her recording.
